Overwatering

Please go to our Glossary link at the bottom of the page for explanations of scientific terms

Identification

This is the number one cause of death for cacti!

Giving cacti too much water can have two possible adverse affects - plants can be weakened and succomb to fungus attack, collapse and turn into a watery mess.

Giving too much water at the start of the season, after a dry resting period, can lead to splitting of the skin. (As can happen with tomatoes if watering is erratic) See photo on right.

Prevention

Allow cacti to dry thoroughly between waterings.

Increase watering amount and frequency gradually after a period of rest.
